5 Tech Tips to keep your Broadcast Antenna System on the Air

17 Feb 2009

With the summer months nearly over, this is a great time to perform maintenance on your Broadcast Antenna System. There are 5 simple steps we can recommend to extend the life of your array, identify any potential problems and help keep you on the air.

  1. Check Earthing – Good earthing is the difference between resetting or replacing equipment. Ensure your antenna system is fitted correctly and free of corrosion.
  2. Check Sealing – Weather, birds and UV light can have a devastating effect on sealing. Checking and resealing connectors yearly can save you downtime in the future.
  3. Return Loss/VSWR Testing – If you don’t already have a log, now is great time to start keeping a record of your array performance monthly or bi-monthly. This will help you catch potential problems before they cost you downtime.
  4. Remove Old Antennas and Steelwork – While the weather is favourable, remove old antennas, steelwork and feeders. Not only will it free up space but this also eliminates possible sources of intermodulation.
  5. Test Stand-By Systems – Ensure your backup is working properly. Do you really want to climb a tower in the middle of winter because the standby also failed?

ZCG Scalar can happily assist you with all 5 steps. We offer a complete range of standby antennas and are fully equipped for rigging, tuning, field testing and maintenance services.

By performing our 5 Tech Tips regularly you will have taken effective steps to ensure your broadcast antenna array does not let you down unexpectedly.
